There is no substitute for time. In temperate climates (and considering well constructed & ventilated VIP pits) waste in VIP latrine pits should be pathogen free and humus like in nature after one year. Lower temperature locations require longer time periods. I would suggest considering a standard twin pit VIP latrine setup as a good solution, with one pit available for emptying and use of material each year or second year. Certainly I would recommend looking at all the information available on VIP latrines as a good information source about waste breakdown and pathogen breakdown.

As a specific comment - an important factor in VIP pit function is ventilation and subsequent drying of the waste, which promotes waste breakdown, temperature increase, and pathogen destruction.

There is much info out there on VIP latrines but you can find a good summary and link to other documents here https://www.bellatrines.co.nz/how_it_works.html

In particular see the ECO SAN RES Factsheet linked at the bottom of that page, or directly here: https://www.bellatrines.co.nz/resources/ESR-factsheet-05.pdf
