With a diesel engine the main problems and component failure can usually be attributed to poor servicing. Without adequate lubrication engine components wear and overheat. Regular oil and oil filter changes will prevent bearing failure, through friction and loss of power. Lubrication and loss of oil pressure are usual causes of camshaft, crankshaft and piston wear and damage. Usually noticeable through excessive engine noise, knocking and a smoky exhaust. (blue smoke - burning Oil, black smoke -unburnt fuel, white smoke - internal engine water leak )

Diesel engines rely on correct quantity and quality of fuel and air for efficient combustion. Diesel fuel quality is critical for correct operation of the fuel system and smooth engine running. Dirty fuel will cause fuel injection pump failure and injector issues. Regular servicing should include fuel filter replacement and draining of any water from fuel water separators.

Fuel suppliers can often sell poor quality diesel containing contamination, dirt, rust from storage drums and water. Ensure that all diesel fuel is passed through a mesh gauze before being used to refuel an engine fuel tank. Its a good idea to disregard the bottom of a 45 gallon drum since this is where the water, sediment and rust will collect. Try to remove the diesel with a small hand pump without stirring the sediment.

Replace air filters or clean them regularly if replacements are not available. Dust and dirt will choke the engine causing poor combustion and loss of power. Dust and dirt will cause internal engine wear if no air filter is used.

Diesel engines in comparison to petrol engines have basic electrical systems. No spark plugs, distributors are fitted. As long as the battery is good and the alternator charging there are usually few issues.

Hope this helps,
