Tanzania- Background research prior to starting operations

Joe Gribben
related country: Tanzania

I am working for a small INGO who are keen to start activities in Tanzania. We are presently undertaking a desktop review of available information to give us a picture of the situation in the country. Could anyone recommend recent assessments/reports which would assist us? Information ranking the relative poverty at regional level and information on the situation in the various regions would be particularly useful.

Joe

Hi Joe, it's hard to help without knowing which area(s) of work you're after, both geographically (whole district or city, or village / community) and thematically, what scale of operation you're thinking at, what sort of partnerships or approach you usually work with (community-led, entrepreneurial, influencing government...).

For a start, you can look at SDG / MDG assessments, UNDP reports, thematic reports from specialised UN agencies, and of course speak to other key actors in the country and listen to what people will tell you are their actual issues...

Hi Joe Consider visiting the Tanzania Development Gateway(https://www.tanzaniagateway.org/), the Economic and Social Research Foundation-ESRF (https://www.esrftz.org/)as well as Research on Poverty Alleviation-REPOA(https://www.repoa.or.tz/ ). But is important you get specific to the issues. You can contact me through +255765785383 Regards Pantaleon Shoki

Hi Joe, please find country-related energy information on energypedia's country page for Tanzania: https://energypedia.info/wiki/Tanzani... or see all articles that are tagged with "Tanzania" category here: https://energypedia.info/wiki/Categor... A further source of information could be the minigrid portal for Tanzania: https://www.minigrids.go.tz/ best, Lisa

Hi Joe, should you be starting work in Mwanza feel free to get in touch. lorna@emergepovertyfree.org We have partnerships with two local NGOS who are working in the region on WASH at schools, health initiatives and environmental protection with income generation for rural communities on the banks of Lake Victoria. Otherwise I would suggest also looking at the countries development plan as this is helpful background reading. https://www.mof.go.tz/mofdocs/msemaji/...

As previous respondants have mentioned, much depends on the type of programme that you are looking to implement. If you are working in the area of emergency response to El Nino/drought or agricultural based livelihoods you could have a look at the website of the Famine Early Warning System Network at www.fews.net/east-africa/tanzania Best regards Martin Ager
