Does anyone know about government experiences/progress towards monitoring safely managed sanitation?

KnowledgePointAdmin
RedR CCDRR

We are currently undertaking an investigation into what it takes to monitor safely managed sanitation in low and middle income countries within the Asia and Pacific region.

We are very interested in hearing about experiences and progress for governments tracking/realigning to track safely managed sanitation. If you have lessons to share it would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Tim

Dear Tim

I am working on a research project that specifically evaluates small-scale wastewater treatment systems in South Asia. Please see the attached project description.

At the Stockholm World Water Week this year we are organising a showcase event on "Monitoring Wastewater Treatment Sustainability: Learning from South Asia’s Small-Scale Systems", where we aim to discuss with the audience on ways to best monitor wastewater treatment progress and how this can inform the design of effective and sustainable investments. For more information, please visit https://programme.worldwaterweek.org/e...

Feel free to get in touch to exchange more if this is of interest for you.

Kind regards from Bangalore, Lukas

Hi Tim - the JMP has designed some new tools to assess safely managed sanitation, which are being tested in several countries at the moment. The WHO team has held a few national workshops (in the countries where these tools are being tested), and has produced an updated standard household questionnaire (for MICS/DHS nationally representative household surveys) which is being shared with countries with the caveat that they are not yet fully tested. The household survey doesn't include much new, as it has proved difficult to get the survey folk to add many new questions (as the surveys are already large and time-consuming, and notoriously difficult to change).

I've attached the "draft questions for piloting in household surveys" (proof of concept for SDG indicator 6.2.1 and 6.3.1) which also contains draft questions for piloting in emptying and transport service provider surveys, and for treatment service providers (as one of the changes is the need to survey service providers to find out what they do with faecal sludge/waste after it is emptied/taken from the household or other location, or after treatment).

Here's a few links that provide some more detail on some of the processes (being used to develop these tools and work with national governments/stakeholders): https://www.wssinfo.org/sdg-baselines/ https://www.unwater.org/what-we-do/mon... https://www.sdg6monitoring.org/news/20...

And if you want any more information, then I would suggest that you contact Kate Medlicott at WHO (who is part of the WHO JMP team): medlicottk@who.int

I hope that helps.

Best regards - Andy Robinson

Dear Tim,

IRC has used the Qualitative Information System (QIS) approach for sanitation monitoring in the BRAC WASH Programme in Bangladesh.

See a list of monitoring reports here.

The validity of the QIS results was independently verified in a report by Emory University.
